About

The City of Iqaluit is in the process of developing a new Solid Waste Management Program. The City is facing a number of solid waste management challenges, including a rapidly growing population and a landfill that has filled up. The September 2010 landfill fire underscores the importance of working together to find waste management solutions that meet both the short and long-term needs of the community.

This process will include:

  1. A review of the current system and an assessment of Iqaluit’s current and future waste management needs
  2. The identification of key issues, challenges and opportunities
  3. An analysis of the feasibility of different solid waste management approaches in Iqaluit’s unique Arctic context
  4. A site selection process to determine where new facilities will be located
  5. The evaluation of alternate Solid Waste Management Program options using a Triple Bottom Line approach
  6. The recommendation of a preferred Solid Waste Management Program, and
  7. The development of a Decommissioning Plan and interim management measures for the current West 40 Landfill.

Project timeline:

  • Start: February 2011
  • End: July 2013
